The Large size egg is by far the most popular size. Until the XL large size was developed a few years ago, the large was the biggest one available so there are still many more of them around than XL. However, even today the large egg remains the most popular size with enough surface area to cook nearly anything you want and a price level favorable to the XL size. Some egg owners like to build their own tables or incorporate an egg grill into an outdoor kitchen or island. When doing so the large size is generally favorable to the XL because it takes up less space / fits into a narrower table or counter top. Using a large size to cook for the family would typically use a bit less charcoal than an XL size just because the charcoal pile would tend to be smaller. Comparing a large egg to an XL egg is like comparing a 1/2 ton truck to a 1 ton truck. The bigger truck would be great when you really, really needed it but most of the time you don't and so the smaller truck would likely be the better choice. If you typically only cook for no more than one family, the large size egg would be an excellent size for you. Also keep in mind that there are a number of accessories like multiple tier racks that can double the actual cooking surface of any size egg.
